the relatively new 134a
refrigerants will be regulated, much like freon is now.
Although the 134 is
not ozone-depleting, it is highly global-warming. It will require a license
to use, as R-12 does now. It's linked to testicular cancer, in Dupont's
own MSDS.
What mechanic, is going to want that? It's not widely
known now. Many air-techs have never read an MSDS on 134
.

it. The autoignition temperature is higher than that of the "non-flammable"

12 or so ounces of
hydrocarbon refrigerant , in a closed system,
but doesn't give a second thought to carrying around thirty gallons
of gasoline with an electric motor stuck down in it...something's
wrong.
The autoignition point of our hydrocarbon refrigerants
is over 1580 F. The hottest surface on an auto is the catalytic converter, and it's hottest is
about 1100 F. People
use various types of hydrocarbons everyday with an open flame. There have been 20
million user years of hydrocarbon refrigerants without incident. Albert Einstein advocated hydrocarbons
as refrigerants in the 20's. He was right again of
course.
